E&G Summary of APG Cuts For Fiscal 2011
Letter to UPC Regarding Alternative Scenarios

Why Join AAUP
Because AAUP defends the principles that matter; academic freedom, shared governance, due process,
and tenure rights. Since its founding in 2000, USM’s local chapter has been a force for
administrative accountability and a voice for faculty’s concerns and grievances. In recent years,
our local chapter has worked to improve communication between the administration and the faculty,
to bolster graduate assistantships and monitor fairness in faculty raises, and to ensure that
administrative policies do not violate academic freedom and due process.
Given the current fiscal crisis, the ongoing national debate about the viability of tenure, and
the increasing reliance on part-time and adjunct faculty, AAUP has an especially important role
to play at Southern Miss. We urge you to become members of our local chapter so we can help
our university weather the financial crisis and move into the future with a healthy and
involved faculty. (Join AAUP-USM)
